HFA was tasked with designing a formal front entrance garden, which doubles as the drawing room terrace. We were also required to create a scheme for a new driveway and parking area, as well as reviving the boggy, unloved pasture beyond.

HFA was tasked with designing a formal front entrance garden, which doubles as the drawing room terrace. We were also required to create a scheme for a new driveway and parking area, as well as reviving the boggy, unloved pasture beyond.

Struck by the geometry of the house's new facade, we designed a similarly geometric terrace, using reclaimed clay pavers with warm red tones to balance the off-white render of the house. The intricacy of the paving layout was used to off-set the simplicity of the facade. Pebbles were incorporated into the design as a link to the original beach pebbles used to pave the old courtyard elsewhere on the property.

The terrace is wrapped in a blanket of soft planting, with Japanese Hakone Grass employed en masse for the way it ripples and waves in the coastal breeze. Gravel was sourced locally from the Sperrin mountains, helping the design to sit comfortably within the wider context.

Having observed the moisture retentiveness of the pasture, we designed a large pond to capture the water, and sowed a carefully selected wetland wildflower seed mix on the remaining pasture. The pond creates a visual link to the sea in the far distance and, as well as attracting an abundance of wildlife and producing breathtaking sunset reflections.
