Hal Forbes Adam is a Landscape Architect based in Rutland, working across the UK on projects ranging from expansive rural estates to intimate city gardens.

Rooted in ecology and shaped with vision and restraint, every project begins with listening to and observing the place, its history, and the people who inhabit it. From this understanding, the Studio designs landscapes that feel timeless, grounded, and quietly assured, and where nature plays the leading role.

Drawing on his formal training in Landscape Architecture and his firm foundation in horticulture and conservation, Hal brings rigour and a wealth of expertise to every project. Layered planting, elegant structure and long-term resilience underpin the work, creating landscapes that evolve gracefully over years and decades.

Hal works closely with homeowners, landowners, architects and developers, offering a calm, personal, and collaborative presence at every stage. His role is part designer, part guide - helping you make considered decisions and ensuring each phase of the process runs smoothly. Hal never seeks to impose a particular template or style onto a project — instead he listens carefully to your wishes and adapts his designs accordingly.

The result is immersive, enduring landscapes which are anchored to people and place, and which truly enrich the lives of those who inhabit them. Landscapes that belong.

About Hal

Hal is a Landscape Architect with a deep-rooted connection to the natural world. Raised in rural North Yorkshire by parents who were involved in both gardening and nature conservation, he grew up surrounded by plants, wildlife, and the quiet rhythm of the countryside — an early foundation for the way he designs today.

After studying History at the University of Manchester, Hal moved to London to pursue horticulture in practice, training under former Chelsea Physic Garden Head Gardener Mark Poswillo while completing the RHS Diploma in Horticulture at Capel Manor. His desire to unite gardening, history, ecology and design led him to study Landscape Architecture at the University of Greenwich, where he graduated with a Master’s degree.

Hal went on to refine his skills at Marcus Barnett Studio and del Buono Gazerwitz — two of the UK’s leading, Chelsea Gold-Medal winning practices — working across contemporary townhouses, boutique hotels, rural retreats and historic estates. These experiences shaped his calm, disciplined approach and his belief in landscapes that feel timeless, organic and genuinely rooted in the place.

He established his own studio in London before relocating to Rutland in 2024, where he now lives with his wife and two children. From this central base, Hal works across the UK, designing landscapes with passion and ecological sensitivity.
