Originally an unhappy and particularly drought-vulnerable section of a longer mixed border, we proposed that this area should be a garden in its own right - a unique space within the wider garden. On the opposite side of the path is a beautiful Italianate terrace designed by Cecil Pincent - a historically significant architect and landscape designer - so we reimagined the area as an extension of Pincent's terrace.

By using the same gravel as the existing path as a mulch across the entire space, and by removing the path edging altogether, we merged the path and planting to create a unified area - softer and more relaxed than before. The space was replanted with a mix of native and non-native perennials and shrubs that are suited to dry conditions, and it was oversown with a selection of annuals and biennials.

The planting is designed to flourish with minimal intervention, allowing the plant community to evolve naturally. The gravel mulch retains moisture in the soil and encourages plants to put down strong roots, meaning the garden looks fantastic even in periods of intense drought.
